Are you interested in making homemade vegan dog treats? This week we set out to find an easy-to-make homemade dog treat recipe that was dog-approved, affordable, cost-effective, and time-efficient. In our search, we found It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken’s “Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treats” recipe and put it to the test!

But, “Why are we doing this?”, you might be asking yourself. This initiative is an undertaking of Puppy Passports, a project dedicated to animal welfare in Antigua and Barbuda. In early April 2024, we officially launched the Puppy Passports Project, you can claim a free commemorative NFT by clicking here. We invite you to learn more about the Puppy Passports project by reading the official Whitepaper. To help support dogs in Antigua easily and cost-effectively, this recipe will surely be a staple in our island dog treat distribution plans. We invite you to try it with us!

Three Ingredient Dog Treat Recipe

These easy-to-make dog treats take about 10 minutes of prep work, and about 30 minutes of oven time to come to life. Here is what you’ll need to make these three ingredient dog treats:

  1. 1 cup of oats
  2. 1/3 cup of pumpkin puree
  3. 1/4 cup of peanut butter

To get started, preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (or 150 degrees Celsius), and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Always be sure to check the temperature your parchment paper is rated for. Now, you’re ready to get started on making these easy vegan dog treats, just follow the directions below.

  1. Add 1 cup of oats to a food processor or blender and blend until your oats are a fine powder.
  2. Next, add 1/3 cup of pumpkin puree and 1/4 cup of peanut butter to the oats and blend until a dough is formed.
  3. Remove the dough from the food processor/blender and roll out on a lightly floured surface (we used some of the ground oats).
  4. Once your dough is rolled out, you can begin to use a cookie cutter or a knife to cut your dog treats from the dough.
  5. Add your cut dog treats to the baking sheet and place them in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Be sure to let the treats cool before you give them to your dog.

When it comes to the shelf life of these dog treats, the original recipe notes that the treats should last for about a week at room temperature, two weeks in the fridge, or that they can be frozen. When our team tested this out, we kept the treats at room temperature for a few days, and then put them in the freezer.

Potcake Approved

Meet Mika, our rescued Potcake from Fort James Beach in Antigua. Mika came into our (Founders of BAC Inc.) lives in the Fall of 2019 when we found her as a stray puppy on the beach. Since then, we worked with Dogs and Cats of Antigua to get Mika to Canada where we adopted her in 2020. Mika is very food motivated, and loves any chance to get her paws on some treats! This made her the perfect candidate to review these three ingredient dog treats.

Being the dog treat expert that she is, these treats offered a “love at first sniff” moment for Mika. With her tail wagging and eager eyes, Mika gladly accepted the treats with no hesitation, making these three ingredient dog treats officially Mika (and Potcake) approved.
